Hi,
I need to use a six foot downrod to hang my ceiling fan which has only three feet of wire. I know making a splice in the downrod would violate code.
But can I make a splice in the round box at the bottom of the fan where the wires for the light kit attach?
I was going to pull out the current wires from the fan and cut them off at that bottom junction box on the ceiling fan and then splice in and run the longer wire. Is that the proper way to do it and do you know if that is up to code?
Any other way to do it?
Thanks a lot.
Scott

If you can get to the wires in the secured box at the bottom, where the light is attached, yes, you can run new wires from that point to the upper bell and attach it to the wires, but you can't make a connection above the fan in the bell held down by gravity alone. It will have to come from the lower box.
