Only thing you can do is check the breakers for the unit.

I would not reccomend you touching anything as you could void your warranty. Call the builder or installer and get tem involved.

I was wondering if someone could provide me with some help on diagnosing my AC. I have a 1600 sq ft house that I have been in for 3-4 years. I just changed the AC filter for the first time. OMG I know and I'm sorry. I had a blonde moment, senior moment, whatever you want to call it. That task was something that had always been taken care of behind the scenes at my parents house. Anyways, I changed the filter, but hardly any cool air is coming out. I checked the AC unit outside and the fan is still whirring. I also tried turning the AC off inside and turning off the breaker in the garage to try and re-jump start it. When I turn the AC off from the thermostat, it makes a crackling noise. I can feel a little cool air coming from the vents, but it's hardly worth calling it AC. When I checked the unit outside, the concrete pad it rests on appeared to be wet and it wasn't from rain. I recently had a neighbor kid mow my yard. Could he have knocked something? and/or was it me being dumb about the filter? Any help, suggestions, etc are greatly appreciated!!!

If you let the unit run, does ice start to form on the larger of the 2 tubes at the outside unit?

There is a very good chance your evap coil is blocked, you saw what the filter looked like, now imagine what the coil looks like.

Yes, there was ice this morning. It was about 70 degrees outside and when I checked my unit this morning there were 2 hunks of ice. One was running along the coil from the house to the unit. The other was a huge fist sized tumor at the base of the unit. I left the AC on last night about 70 degrees on the thermostat and woke up to the ice. I turned the unit of before I went to work. It was mentioned that there may be another filter to change. Any idea where this may be? My vents aer all up in the ceilings if that helps.

There possibly could be a filter inside the indoor unit itself.

I appreciate your help. When it comes to this kind of stuff, I know nothing. I guess I'm scared it's going to be really expensive. If I have to call a repair guy, do evaporator coils and/or freon cost a lot?

I'm sorry to say it won't be cheap, but first you need to have the cooling coil looked at to determne if it is dirty. Does this same system provide heat for your house? It's hard to imagine that you haven't had problems before now.

If your cooling coil is plugged up real bad, I would have expected you to have heating issues as well. 70 degrees inside and out could freeze a unit up. Try it on a warmer day.

I would advise you to contact a good local HVAC company and have them do annual maintenance on the system, that will tell you everything you need to know. The tech will also tell/show you how to maintain and properly operate the system if you ask him.

If your home is only 8 mo old your unit may still under warranty. Call your builder he will let you know for sure.
If it's a problem caused by a lack of maintenance it won't be covered by warranty though.
