We have a finished Attic room that is way too hot and setting a temp for the system downstairs (only one thermastat for whole house ... it's old) really does nothing for upstairs. We are considering not air conditioning this attic room and were looking for advice.
Current config:
Attic room:
two A/C vents going into attic room.
one intake
one whole house fan specifically for the attic room only.
Main floor:
6 A/C vents
one large intake
The system is a little old and from the looks of it, extra ducts were added to the existing system to take care of the attic room. We were thinking blocking off the A/C vents and the intake in the attic room would make the system more efficient for the main floor. The attic can be taken care of by a whole hose fan that was installed just for the attic (does not vent the main floor, the attic room is closed off from the main floor by a door.)
Once the current system breaks down we'll purchase a dual zone system where we can control the A/S for the Attic and main floor separatly. However, we believe we will also have to pull out the ceiling of the attic room and properly install a heat reflective barrier and create an airflow space between the roof and the attic room ceiling (the builders stuffed the current space with insulation that is battened down and can't be pulled out!) before a new system would be effective.
Suggestions? Comments? Different ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Ken

Not sure of your location but what about heat in the winter ??
You could close those two off but you need to temorarily do it 1st and take temprature differentials across your airhandlers supply and return for heating and a/c to be sure you're not starving its air.
