I have a corner in my rec room that needs the padding replaced. How can I take up the carpet and replace it without having to put down new carpet??

If it's just the corner, use a pliers to get hold of the yarn of the carpet in the corner you're concerned with. Gently tug on the yarn. This will disengage the carpet from the tack strip. If the carpet is in pretty tightly, it may require working your way along from the corner out a few inches on both sides to get it loose enough to pull up the tip of the corner. You want to be careful you don't apply too much pressure in this stage or the yarn will be pulled from the backing and that's not a good thing. Once you get some of it pulled loose from the strip, it acts a lot like a zipper. Get hold of it and pull up and into the room. It should come off the strip easily at this point. The only thing that may complicate things is if the base board was installed after the carpet was. If that's the case you'll know right away because the base will be sitting on top of the tack strip, effectively trapping the carpet under it, making it very difficult to get the carpet out, if not impossible. In this instance, the base must be removed and then the carpet disengaged. Once the carpet is loose, lay it back into the room until you get past the area you need to install the new pad in and go from there. If you need to know how to "go from there", let us know.
