I am being offered a AutoFlo s2020 Steam humidifier at a pretty good price. The specs i see say that the unit is rated at 20 gallons per day. Does this mean it wiill use 20 gallons per day? Also in a typical hour what is the normal runtime of the unit if it is set at about 30-40% humidity. My conerns are that the unit will waste water as well as electricity

If the system ran non-stop, yes it will put out about 20 gallons a day.. But it won't be happing since your home will be holding it in, and be made else where in the home from the showers, sink, and cooking.
Run time will be vary by home and outdoor temps. It may use a bit more power than the standard by pass type unit, but it will add 100% of the water into the air. So over all it should break out even.
