I am staining my new pine windows (my process is: conditioner, 2 coats of stain, one coat of clear satin poly). On the first window I stained, I went a bit lighter on the stain than the second. My wife likes the darker stained window better. Is there any way to darken the first window a bit without redoing it. I only need a slight darkening and was hoping there is some way I could do the job without sanding off the poly already on the wood.
Thanks in advance for any advice given.

Unfortunately, the poly has (should have) sealed in the stain
It shouldn't accept anymore
It's possible that it might
It might be worth a try in a small test area
But I would be prepared to wipe it off

You may be able to darken the polyurethaned window with a coat of a product similar to Minwax Polyshades which is a polyurethane with stain mixed in.There are a variety of lines of this type of product and almost any hardware store will carry at least one. This would be experimental and you'd need to test it on an out of the way spot of make a test board to see what your results will be.Regular stain will likely not penetrate polyurethaned wood but additional polyurethane would adhere to an existing coat.

If you can get a little bit of the pigment from the bottom of the stain can and mix it in with some poly, you can "paint" a coat of tinted poly on the window which will darken it. This is basically the same thing as minwax polyshades. It must be applied evenly, as thin or heavily coated areas will be lighter or darker!

Thanks all for the good advice.
I have tried more stain, but as warned, I had to wipe it off since it would not penetrate the poly coat. I am hoping the ploy/stain method will work.
Best regards,
Al
