Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers - Conflicting dehumidifier sizing recommendations

Why do the experts here always recommend buying a dehumidifier in the 60-100 pint range when the AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) guide recommends much less for the same square footage and conditions. After all, dehumidifiers use lots of electricity (even Energy Star units), and the 60-100 pint units are going to be a big hit on the electric bill. Here are AHAM's guidelines:

Values in table indicate dehumidification required in Pints per 24 hours, based on the area of the space to be dehumidified and the conditions that would exist in that space when a dehumidifier is not in use.

500 sq. ft:
moderately damp: 10
very damp: 12
wet: 14
extremely wet: 16

1000 sq. ft:
moderately damp: 14
very damp: 17
wet: 20
extremely wet: 23

1500 sq. ft:
moderately damp: 18
very damp: 22

extremely wet: 30

2000 sq. ft:
moderately damp: 22

Most of the bigger units will use about the same amount of electricity than a 50 pint dehumidifier. Plus they have the extra capacity for no AC load times and if any water gets into the home from flooding are pipe leak. Most also have a merv 11 filter to help filter the air.
