Presently use Dish Satelite for TV, Landline for dialup modem for computer and phone, and wireless cellphone plus ISP provider. Each is a separate charge which adds up to well over $100.00 per month which seems excessive.
Wondering if anyone out there has a thorough understandng of the current status of development of the wireless technology. Is it lilkely that some kind of combined service will become available within the next year that would incorporate connectivity for phone, internet, and TV, without excessive cost?
Located remote from phone company so DSL won't work. Will a wireless card in the computer work with the cellphone connection?
Appreciate any info.
Thanks

No cable access I take it?
There are several cellphone providers that offer a wireless card for your laptop, and most others have a data plan and cellphones that can be USB'd or bluetoothed to your computer (we used one for several weeks after Hurricane Ivan).
You will NOT like the price of the service, or it's speed.

Thanks Pendragon, yep I'm 5 miles short of cable and my 3 year extorsion contract has expired and I hope to avoid renewing it. There are a lot of whiz kids developing new service but I have not kept up with the technology. Am hoping to get some kind of broadband as my 56k modem will not connect any better than 26.4, and most of the time at only 24.0k. Am planning to move within the year and hope to be able to get a total package at our new location.
Don't have a laptop yet, still stuck with the desktop.
Sorry to hear bout that ole gal Katrina.

Thanks Furd. Located in northern Mojave Desert. Clearwire does not serve this area. Closest is in Fresno which is over 100 miles.

If you want a near broadband wireless ISP thati s not a cell-phone system you really need to look locally to see what is offered.

Thanks Classicsat. What I was hoping was to find a comprehensive service that would provide phone, TV, and internet from a single source. Sooner or later it will be available but aparently not now. Recently visited my daughter in Texas and they have phone and computer wireless set up. They refer to their house as a "hot spot". Aparently the wireless provider installed a radio relay antenae on the roof and provide broadband, I am located 20 miles from the nearest city so probably cannot get wireless here. I do have a wireless cellphone - why can't I install a wireless card in the computer and use the cellphone connection for the computer - does the radio relay know the difference? Cellphone is digital, computer is desktop. Also thinking of buying a wireless laptop but it may not work here either.

As already mentioned, most modern cellphones offer data connectivity through the use of a USB cable or other connection (such as bluetooth).
You need to contact your carrier to see what type of data plans they offer, as only they know what is offered in your area.

You can get a wireless cell-phone card, but they have to have a high-speed tower in your area, or you will get lower speed (<100K). And it is expensive too for the service.
