Hello,

I am planning to paint my fireplace (not the inside but all around and the base in front of it) which is made of red bricks. I was planning to prime using zinsser cover stain oil based primer and then to paint with Duron plastic Kote eggshell.

Is this the right primers/paint to use?

Considering that the fireplace is a wood burning fireplace, I am a little concerned with the following:

1) Will the paint resist the heat?
2) Is eggshell the right sheen considering that it might get dirty and I might have to wash (especially the base in front of the fireplace) from time to time.

Thx.

I wouldn't use the oil Coverstain. That primer is best for...covering stains. I'd use a clear or pigmented acrylic masonry primer. Then top coat with 2 coats of acrylic enamel with a sheen of eggshell/satin or semi-gloss.

Not familiar with Duron's Plastic Kote.

Can't be exactly sure how heat resistant it would be. I've done several of these over the years, but can't really recall if they were active wood-burning fireplaces. May have been gas, or inactive decorative types. But that is the best system for unpainted brick/mortar joints.
