Would like to know the best way and what product to use to paint an older brick fireplace? The masonry floor in front of the fireplace is smooth, but rough on fireplace itself.

Are you just wanting to paint the brick that is outside of the firebox?
The brick wall/mantle can be painted with latex primer/paint but I assume that the hearth is shiny because it has a sealer of some sort on it which might require a solvent based primer.
