I have a gas hot waer heater. Just noticed last night that the hot water is much hotter then it has been...turned down the thermostat but did not help. I assum the thermostat needs to be replaced. I usually fix my own things but have never worked on a hot water heater. Is this an easy fix?

Appreciate any help and ideas.

Thanks,

Harlan

Did you wait for a day or two after turning down the thermostat? You needed to use the hot water that was stored and replace it with cold water before determining the thermostat was still heating the water too hot.

How old is this heater? Gas water heaters usually have an expected life of eight to ten years. If the heater is more than seven years old it would probably be wiser to replace the entire heater.

Yes, you CAN replace the thermostatic gas valve IF you can find a compatible one. Sometimes the "big box" stores carry water heater thermostatic gas valves.
