Rugs, Carpets and Carpeting - Drilling through carpet?

This is a stupid question, but gotta ask.

I'm installing a new safe in my closet and needs to be bolted to the slab.

I've heard of taking a utility knife and cutting an X on the spots that need to be drilled, but is there another way to prevent the carpet from binding up in the bit? I can't give my wife an excuse to get more laminate. :-)

I need to drill 2 3/8" holes.

Has anyone had any luck using one of these?

In the same vein as the link, you could take a simple hole punch about an inch or so and punch out a circle that could be glued back in if you removed the safe.

Other than that, i really wouldn;t worry about it but do do something to prevent the snags, they can get real big real fast if you are not careful. (trust me, I know)

I think I will just cut some pieces out with a utility knife. It doesn't have to be pretty because the safe will cover it.

I'm thinking a nice cigarette burn might do the trick as well! :-()

instead of cutting circles & removing them (and probably losing them), why not cut a shape like a V or U or l_l or an H or X, and then just bend the carpet back like a flap? then the carpet material is right there when/if you ever remove the safe.

how about cut x , big enough for a 1/2 tube(metal or plastic), insert the tube then insert the drill

I've been out of town and am sure it's too late to be of any help, but here it is, just in case. I do it the way Annette suggested. Cut an X and fold the pieces under. No missing carpet that way if it's ever an issue in the future.

Thanks! I ended up cutting the X's and the safe is now securely mounted to the floor.
