I'm planning on putting in a swamp cooler on my roof (no existing jack or ducting) and am contemplating doing the work myself. I'll be putting in a 6500cfm or so unit with a single drop. Chatting to a plumber the other day they suggested using a side draft swamp cooler, with a right angled duct taking the air down through the roof. Their reasoning was that this is significantly quieter than a direct down draft, and also that it provides some protection against water entry if the cooler leaks.
This sounded reasonable, but does anyone out there have any comments on this suggestion?
If it's a good idea, my next question is how to find that elbow duct. My local HD has square roof jacks which are about 20" x 20", but doesn't seem to carry anything like a right angled piece of ducting of this diameter. Anyone have any idea where I can get something like that? I've seen similar things on roofs around here - are they custom built?
Cheers,
Simon

I think any sheetmetal shop worthy of the name could make one for you and yes, I think it's an excellent idea for the reasons stated.
