Yesterday DTV came and installed my new HDTV receiver. It's a model H20.
I thought I was being smart and bought HDMI cables for both the receiver and the new DVD recorder that I bought to go with my new HDTV.

When the technician installed the system for me he stated that the system most likely would not recognize my HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV and he was partially right. It does not work in HD format in that anything over 480 resolution going through the HDMI cable flickers in that the picture is not steady and goes off and on.

The tech made a comment that he did not know why they do this but he has been told that the system may work in a couple of months or to call Directv.
I called and got nowhere with DTV's customer service and could not get to talk to their tech people which is an issue I have taken up via email with their corporate people. I have also sent an email to their tech people about this.
In the meantime, the unit works fine on component setup.

Has anyone run into this HDMI issue besides me? And if so is there a fix that I can apply?

Very common issue, and I don't think there is a fix for it just yet.

There are several different versions of HDMI, version 1.2, 1.1 and 1.0. Your TV and DVD player, etc maybe running two different versions which is causing your issue. I'll try to investigate more and see if there is a resolution.

I would do a search for High definition Forums. Lot of information out there that will help.

Just a word of caution; don't let anybody tell you that the problem is "cheap" HDMI cables and that you have to buy the $150 "high quality" ones (hopefully you didn't shell out big bucks for the ones you bought).

Yes DTV tells me (admits) that it's their chipset in their receiver that is not compatible with my new TV.
They claim they are working on the problem and it will be a downloadable solution to their receiver.

HDMI has also been an issue with Dish Network receivers.
My eyes cannot see a difference between hdmi or component cables and I prefer optical digital for audio anyway.

Yes my receiver manual says the only ways to get true Dolby 5.1 is via the HDMI or the optical outputs on the receiver.
My older surround sound system is just old enough (and still very nice) that it does not have an optical input.
That's why I want the HDMI cables to work so bad.
If the HDMI worked, the TV would get the signal and from there I can use the coaxial outputs from it to the sound system.
