I have a termite colony in a stump approx. 15' from my house. It was a large pine tree that was cut down two years ago and the stump was cut level @ ground level.
I need to kill the colony and am worried about them spreading into my house. I had a termite inspection last year and got a clean bill of health then. The local pest control companies are recommending treating my entire house/exterior but this is very expensive ($1,000). What is the best way to treat this stump/colony? Should I spend $1,000 to "prevent" a problem in my house?
Thank you!

You can purchase termiticide to pour into and around the decaying stump. How long ago was the house treated? With what? Today's termite treatments last about five years or longer depending on environmental factors. Reputable exterminators usually will return for annual inspection and spot treatments as long as contract is maintained.
Whether you choose to treat the perimeter of the home to prevent termites, is a personal choice. What type of treatment for $1,000? What warranty?

Thanks for the reponse..
the house was not treated but has been inspected yearly (twice) since I moved in.
The $1,000 quote was for a perimeter treatment (spray?) with holes every 2' or so with a yearly guarantee. the guarantee would be renewed annually for approx. 80/year.
i'm hoping that this type of expense is a bit of overkill but wanted to get some feedback.
i live in maryland, outside of baltimore.

Termites in astump does not mean termites in your home
Treating the stump would have no effect as far as protecting your home other than to deny the termites one source of food and force them to look elsewhere
Termtes are random foragers and my or may not attack your home anyway
Maintain your inspections, if termites become an issue have your house treated
I am just not a big fan of peace of mind treatments
If you want an extra layer of inspection
drive white pine stakes around your house at about ten feet or so less if you want
Drive them down to slightly below the level of your slab if you have one or about a foot if you don't
pull them up occasionally to see if there is any termite activity
Some companies charge over $2000 for that very same system, just in neat little green cases

ocoee: Thank you for the comment.... sounds like good advice... what would you recommend to treat the stump (termites)? There are a lot of products sitting on the shelf @ the local big box home center.
