I have a waterfall carpet installation on the stairs, and my cat, God bless her..., has dug a hole(3" x 3") where the riser meets the tread (i.e. on the nosing). Is there any way that I can repair this??

I was thinking of cutting the carpet at the back of the tread at the top of the step, and at the base of the riser below the step, and inserting a spare piece I have. But I'm worried this will upset the rest of the carpet on the stairs due to the waterfall installation.

Has anyone any experience with this?

Miles.

This is a difficult job DIY to have look good when done. I'd contact a carpet installer and have this done professionally.

Thanks. I was hoping it wouldn't come to that, but the more I think about it, the more I agree with you...

HEY, come on. This is a do it your self forum.

Milesoneill, Your plan is actually the way it's done. Do you have access to tools? Use an electric tacker to secure the carpet on the steps above and below the one you're replacing so you don't disturb them. This will be at the back of the tread on the step below and the bottom of the riser on the step above. Place the staples directly into the tack strip that holds them and spread the nap so you can get to the backing with the nose of the stapler. You want to secure the carpet, but don't want staple marks caused by trapping yarn under the fasteners. If you don't have access to an electric tacker, small brad nails will accomplish the same thing. Normally, you don't want to staple or nail through the face of carpet, but need to in this instance. Once this is accomplished and the aforementioned steps are secure, proceed with your plan. If you need further assistance, holler.

Don't have access to an electric tacker but could, like you suggest, use a few brad nails instead.

I'll have a thorough poke at it this evening to see if I'm happy to give it a go. Professionally done or not, the carpet need to come off!

Thanks for the advice guys!
