My mother recently passed away and this was her favorite plant. My Dad and I just moved into a new place and are trying to plant Hydrangeaceae in the garden in Mom's Memory.......but they just seem to wilt and look like they are dying. We buy them at the nursery and they are healthy as can be. Please help.......looking for answers

John and Dad,
Good evening.
Hoping your garden is coming along nice. Hydrangea's are beautiful.
I'm not a pro at this, but i do know from recent experience and advice that Hydrangea's love to be on the North side of the house OR in your case - a shaded part of your garden.
Too much sun will cause the daily "wilting". They love shade.
I have two Hydrangea plants - the one that is on the North East side of the house gets too much sun and is wilting (soon to be moved.) The one on the North side does great.
My green thumb friends advice has worked.
They love water but they do not like to be drenched.
You may also need to test your soil for Alkaline and acidic levels. The water beneath the roots needs the ability to drain well.
Hoping that helped a little.
Happy Gardening.

Water deep so roots will grow deep and strong in search of moisture and nutrients. If you stick finger in soil and soil is dry, you need to water. Mulch to conserve moisture.

Also keep in mind that while they love do love shade, they do need some sun too. I have a row of them planted in an area that gets no more than 1 hour of sun a day. They are leggy and green and tall, but one one bloom. This is what will happen with not enough sun.
I have others that get about half sun half shade, and they do well. You'll have to find the correct balance. Move the plant around (if it's in a pot) to find the area where it blooms but does not wilt excessively. If you want them to bloom blue you need to make the soil acidic by adding acid.
They do require more water during the blooming period. Good luck and I'm sure you will develop great plants and blooms to honor your mother's memory.
