Our outdoor compressor has grounded out and the two contractors we have received estimates from insist that the indoor coils must be replaced when we replace the outdoor unit. A friend says it ain't necessarily so.
I understand that the indoor coils must be as efficient as the new outdoor unit, but is replacement mandatory if the indoor coils are 12 SEER and the new outdoor unit is 13 SEER? Thanks.

It is always best practice to have a matched system installed. You will not get the efficiency rating using the old coil and they may not warranty the outdoor unit.

I am with Matt on this.. if you are looking for and paid for a 16 SEERS system. you are NOT going to get that SEERS rating... You just be dumping a lot of money down the drain... You may only end up with 11 SEERS.

I'm having the same problem, except I need a need coil drain pan. There is nothing wrong with anything else but they tell me I need a new coil because its part of the pan. Then I will need a new outdoor unit to match the SEER rating for the indoor coil or they won't warranty it.
A whole new system for a drain pan??....... what a crock.
