Hello Eveybody... I started having problems with my A/C Unit last week.. Fan wasnt spinning and the compressor was humming.. So , changed the Fan motor and the compacitor... Everything worked perfect until a week later.. I beleive my AC guy did not put enough electrical tape around the capacitor.. and some wires touched, burnt it up pretty bad.. My AC guy came back out and said the compressor has shorted out and needs to be replaced.. or that i would need to replaced the Condensor Unit... My question is.. is worth just changing the compressor. or should spend the extra money and get a new Condensor Unit?? I have a 3 Ton (10 Seer) Unit.. It might be a problem trying to find a Unit w/ 10 Seer?? Any help would be Greatful.. Thanks in advance.

How old is it ??

Unless the contractor has a 10 SEER from old stock you'll have to get at least a 13 SEER. If you just can't afford a 13 SEER coil it will still work but you just wont get the 13 SEER rating out of it.

The unit is 8 years old.. I live in New Orleans.. and since Hurricane Katrina.. Ive heard its hard to find a 3 ton 10 Seer Unit.. The reason im looking for a 10 seer unit.. i was assuming that if i was to go with a 13 seer. i would have to change the Air Handler Unit also?!?!?

They quit making 10 SEER units last year. The stuff you have indoors will still work but you will not get the efficiency rating. If you can swing it, it would be best to replace the indoor coil with the outdoor unit.

You could have them just replace the compressor. Replacement compressors are readily available.
