Have a barrel with an old hand pump that was made into a water fountain, is there anything one can put in the water that will help eliminate algae growth and not harm the pump?

There are several chemicals that will kill algae and not harm the pump. Check with a swimming pool place, they should have something and be able to tell you how often to put it in the fountain.
