I am desperately seeking help in trying to identify the model numbers of an older split system I have. I have pictures, but can not post them for some reason. I would love to forward them on to anybody who thinks they might know. The air handler is a 2 ton straight cool with the filter on the front, vertically, as opposed to its normal horizontal position (front flow?). The condenser is a Trane XE 800, 2 ton straight cool. Looks like it may have been manufacture in 1989? Any information will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

You can host the pictures on a site such as photobucket and provide a link here to copy and paste into a browser.

What problems are you having that you need the model numbers ?

On the outdoor unit there should be a tag on the unit down where the refrigerant lines enter the unit and on the airhandler there should be a tag inside after you remove the front panel.

Yeah, there is nothing there. Looks like they were removed a long time ago. I was hoping someone might know by seeing them.

If you kill power and open the units up, look for part numbers on different parts. On the fan motors see if you can see an "MOT" number. Should be a part number on the compressor and (if your lucky) tags on the coils.

Trane should be able to do a "where used" querie and narrow your search to one or two models.

Why you need a model #? if you are planning on a new system. That is not needed for that. it just take out of the home, and new all together is put in.

I'm not replacing the system. It works fine. Just bought the home and there are some open permit issues. County just wants the model numbers to pass it. I'm just hoping someone will see them and be able to give me a model number.

Open permits? These units are 10 years -/+ couple of years.

If there a permits on this, I'd have them go back to the installing dealer, they should have the model info on hand. Otherwise, I'd just have them close it up since it's not a new system.

It's not that simple. The install was done years ago, incorrectly and without a permit. We pulled the permit to reinstall it the correct way, all new ductwork, copper, high voltage, low voltage, etc. We spent a lot of money and time doing it and I don’t want to replace the equipment since it does work fine. The county wasn’t happy about reinstalling the old equipment, but they have agreed to pass it if I can just get them the model numbers.

This sounds like a case of bureaucratic red tape for no other reason than to harass the public.

Depending on where you live the answer may be as simple as passing a picture of a dead president (I won't suggest which dead president) to the clerk and pointing to the serial number stating that "this is the model number of my unit" could get your problem solved.

Of course that action may also result in your facing a judge and telling him/her why you cannot comply with the request for a model number.

I feel for you.
