Greetings folks:

I have an older Tempstar that I am guessing was installed back around 1990. Just bought the home 2 yrs ago. The Central AC never really cooled the house much more than a few degrees-but this yr, not at all. So, I have the service guy come over form the company that installed the unit. He tells me my system has a small leak but still holds 110lbs of pressure. He said I could opt to replace the A-Coil or try a recharge. I opted for the latter/lesser expense as I don't believe the unit was ever recharged (bought home from in-laws).

So, now the unit is really pumping some cold air...BUT, the outside unit was shaking more than normal. The tech put a 20lb rock on top of the unit & its not shaking as much. There are 4 bolts that hold the fan/motor in place & one has started to crack. Seems as though the fan is out of balance.

What should my plan of action be with my situation?? Can I repair this or am I screwed??

I personally would not reccomend putting much money into a 17 year old unit. Your near the end of its usefull life.

An unbalanced fan will cause the symptoms you describe. Cracks are not uncommon in such situations.
