I have a 97 sea ray with a mercruiser 3.0l I/O. When I pulled the boat out of the water I noticed that the lower gear unit was damage and the rudder or fin piece had broken off. I am not sure if it was from something in the water that I hit or my error when I pulled it out of the water. I might not have had the motor up enough. I know that I need to get this fixed but I want to take out this weekend, is this rudder important to the overall performance of the boat? How critical is this piece? Any info please, i am a new boat onwer.

The only thing critical about it is if you go over something solid w/ the prop turning and hit it,you'll be looking for a new prop!!!!

Fix it with a SS skeggard or a keelshield from any boat store.
