I just purchased a new home in Montana. This house has your typical gas water heater with a vent going up, and out, the roof. I am concerned about energy efficiency as there is a six inch diameter fresh air vent piped into the attic space from the water heater closet. I understand the need for combustion air in a tight home. However, isn't there a way to get fresh air to a gas water heater without the need to fill the water heater closet with outside air? This makes me wonder if an electric water heater will improved energy savings because there is no need for COLD combustion air to be introduced into a cozy warm home.
