We're getting new berber carpet in the main bedroom, closets, and hallway next week.

I've started removing the old carpet and find the existing padding to be in very good condition, and it is 1/2" thick.

Is it possible to decline the padding supplied with the new carpet and use what I have?? Not to mention it will save a few dollars also.

TIA,
fred

1/2" is too thick for berber. Too, you will void your warranties.

IMO it would be better to replace it, dirt always works it way thru carpet and I'm sure the padding is dirtier than you realize. I'd only consider leaving the padding on a rental.

side note - when I had my living rm and hall carpetted the carpet store was pushing what I considered to be cheap padding. I didn't want any part of it until they gave me a garuntee [in writing] that the padding would last the life of 2 carpets - unbelievable :p 6 months later the carpet company went out of business :( and while my carpet is still in good shape, the padding is not

Marksr - It's astonishing that a store would tell you something like that. Pad is the key to carpet longevity and I'll push for better pad before better carpet. A lower grade carpet will last longer over really good pad than a higher grade carpet over low grade pad.

fewalt - Twelvepole is correct, 1/2 inch pad is too thick for the carpet you're getting. Manufacturers won't warranty berber over anything thicker than 3/8. The backing is usually stiffer and 1/2 allows it to flex too much. The stiff backing won't tolerate too much flexing and tends to come apart.

Smokey - I think the reason the store pushed all the cheap padding is they probably knew they were going out of business and had a lot of cheap padding on hand. Why else would they have given me a written warranty for that padding to last the life of 2 carpets? The sad thing is they probably screwed more customers than just me.

Oh, I'm sure you're right. You were most likely just one in a long line. Another suspicious part of that is the "two carpets" thing. I'm pretty sure twelvepole is correct about the warranty thing also. The only way I can see for them to make a claim like that is if they knew they were never going to have to worry about it.
