Hoping someone can help... I'm a new homeowner and have no experience with electric water heaters.
I tripped a breaker yesterday by having the vacuum and an portable electric heater plugged into the same outlet so I went outside to the box to check it out... everything looked fine - all switches were "on". I turned each one off then back on again to reset the breakers. Everything was fine - now I know to not vacuum and use the electric heater at the same time.
The next morning I went to shower and there is no hot water. I get lukewarm water - then it runs cold after awhile. I reset the breakers again and nothing. After looking online I found I could "reset" the hot water heater by taking off a panel and pushing the red reset button. I turned off the power to the breaker box and unplugged the hot water heater, opened up the panel then plugged the unit back in and turned the breaker back on - I pushed in the reset button on the hot water heater and nothing. It didn't make a "click" like I read in the online directions - there isn't hot water - nothing.
Help!

The two circumstances should not be related, but....you never know.
You will need an electrician to check this out. You need to be able to verify that power is getting TO the water heater, and that the thermostats are working. This will require a voltmeter, and testing on live 240 circuits, so it may be best to leave this one to the professional.

Could be the thermostats..most likely is. You could try turning the temparture up on em as well (not sure what the current setting is). Each thermostat should have its own setting and you want both to read the same.
Also, it is possible you have 1 element out.
Either way..thermostats aren't too expensive....so just to be safe you could just go ahead and replace em and see how it goes. They come with a wiring diagram to help guide you.
Thats the best i can say without you using a voltage tester as 594tough mentioned in his post.
