I've seen a few cases like mine here from searching, but want to run it by the experts here to see if my assumption is right.

We have a Lennox unit outside. Turning the cool on, it will wake up, rattle a bit, then click and go quiet. The fan doesn't turn.

Is this likely to be a dead capacitor? If so, can anyone offer some tips on whether it's user serviceable? I'm OK with electrics (former network engineer), but haven't ever looked inside anything to do with AC.

Earliest anyone can come out to fix it is next Monday, so DIY is the likely solution whether I want it to be or not.

OK, the capacitors are replaced, but the fan is still frozen in place. There's a growly angry something in there now, though -- a bad fan motor, perhaps?

Any ideas what else it may be?

with power off does the fan turn freely?

If not get a new fan and new cap.
