My house is only about twelve feet off of the road (old house). The house & road are on a hill which slopes from one side of the house to the other--about a three foot difference in grade across the front of the house.
The road has been built up over the years to the point where it is about a foot and a half higher than the sidewalk that runs across the front of my house. I am about to tear it all out, regrade and replace the sidewalk.
What I'll end up with is a small valley between the house and the road, and the sidewalk will run right down the valley. I have to create the proper grade away from the house, and then grade back up to the road.
This 'valley' will also channel water when it rains. That's not necessarily intentional, but if it works that way, it'll keep the water away from my foundation.
So I've basically got a sidewalk over a drainage channel. The sidewalk will be made from 2 x 3 precast pavers that I already have. I'm thinking of putting six inches of 3/4 gravel base underneath, and lining both sides of the gravel with drainage fabric to keep the dirt out. I'm hoping that this will provide a proper base for the sidewalk AND allow for drainage.
Also--should I be concerned about frost heave during winter--does my situation make it more of an issue?
Your comments & suggestions are appreciated. Thanks,
Brian
