I have two double hung windows set side by side in a brick wall. I would like to replace them. I'm wondering if it is safe to remove the post that is between the windows and reframe the opening and then perform basically a new install of the window of my choice. Or must I just be content with replacement windows?

If you remove the mullion cap (the vertical piece of interior trim that covers the joint where the two windows meet) you should be able to determine whether there is a stud between the windows. If the mullion cap is about 1 1/2" wide, there probably isn't a stud there.
If there is no stud there, if you completely remove the windows you will have one big opening and you can do whatever you like.
If there is a stud there, it might only be there as a spacer, but you'd want to determine if there is a header above both windows before cutting that stud out. But it could easily be done.
