I ripped up the tile from our hallway which most likely was put down in the fifties.

I want to strip the adhesive off but it is thick and really laid on. Most people question whether a heating gun would do the job. Any thoughts??

Tile is normally put down with a cement based adhesive, such as thinset. A heat gun will have no effect on it. A chisel and lots of elbow grease should get it up. As you get toward the end of it, a grinder helps get the rest of it, but it's a very dusty and messy job. If you're talking about vinyl tile, heat does help with that adhesive.

Asbestos laced cutback adhesive.
