Hi,
making repairs on old building which has a wall composed of sandstone rock and brick. Part of the wall had a plaster coat.
Wondering what is the best way to apply plaster/cement coat over remainder of wall? This is an exterior wall. Too many patched in spots to leave as is.

old plaster was painted. where stone and brick are exposed there is no paint

The paint will be an issue. You will have to coat those sections with a paintable primer/bonder or remove the paint. Other than that, make sure the surfaces are clean and solid, and stucco away.

thanks for your help! Should I apply any special bonding agent to the brick/stone? I wanted to freehand with a trowel but did not know if I could. I know how to tape & bed but have little masonary experience. any trick to mixing the mortar?

There are a lot of variables. As a rule, I like to add an integral bonding agent and fiber to the mix, and will adjust the dryness of the mix to the conditions of the surface and the environmental conditions. Drier is good, to the point that it is unworkable. Surface prep is everything: Clean, tight, and somewhat moist will provide the best adhesion.
