I'm assuming there is something clogged in there. Should I pour something in it? Unhook the pipes under the sink? If so, do I need to do anything special (cut the water off) before I unhook them?
thanks

If you had a clog, the drain would not be functioning properly. You could have a clog in the vent pipe that goes up through the roof and you are getting sewer odor because water in trap is being siphoned out.
Before going up on the roof with a water hose or calling the plumber, clean the sink drain. Food particles get trapped in the drain and disposal and, along with the moisture, create an ideal environment for bacterial growth. Pour a cup of baking soda into the drain and then pour vinegar into drain to foam it out. Follow up by pouring a pot of boiling water down the drain. If this is done periodically sinks tend not to have an odor. If you have a garbage disposal clean it too. There are enzyme digester drain cleaners that will digest bacteria and organic material in drains. These can be found in plumbing aisles.

What twelvepole says and another suggestion - we grind up a slice or two of spent lemon or lime in the disposal to clear out odors. They are hard to grind up, so they swirl around in the disposal acting as a cleaning pad of sorts, and then smell nice when you are done.
