I'd like to enlarge an opening in an above grade block wall that has a brick exterior. Is this a DIY possible job or any tips on how to go about it?
From what I gather so far I'd have to build a support wall inside the basement to support the joists while the blocks are cut out and a new header is installed.
On the brick side a new lintel would need to be installed first and then the brick could be cut with a masonry blade and removed.

its best not to build it and let it dry out and as its aleady standing not best to cut it or you can do this... your best bet is if its dried out use a brick hammer and a brick bolster but if its not cut it out the shape you want it but if you really want an open window use a wasp hammer and a bolster but just keep the weight of the bolster with the brick, lose that weight and you will find yourself with cracked bricks you can also do this with if the bricks are big cut them in the lie of the cement not the line of the brick, like cut the line in the cement the gaps between the bricks can you tell me why you are doing this?

Hello Land man, thanks for the response but it's hard to follow what you're saying as I'm guessing English is not your first language.
Yes, the wall is already standing as the house was build 40 years ago.

I did a similar project and found it worth the $350 just to pay someone to cut the hole. Buy the time you add up the rental costs and hassles, it was money well spent. The prof cutter has much better equipment than you can rent and will do a better job than you can do. Look up concrete cutting in the phone book.
