Hi. I'm new to this site and hope someone can help with this problem. My kitchen has a parquet floor. I did not know what the finish was, but it was a matte-like finish and was starting to look worn such that the floor appeared dirty. I didn't want to refinish this floor, just make it appear better. So i applied two coats of trewax one step (after cleaning the floor with their cleaner). I thought this was basically an acrylic finish. The manufacturer says it is permanent and cannot be removed. Well, the floor is shiny, but, after two days, is still sort of tacky feeling. If i spill water on it, and wipe it up, it is almost like it is greasy the way the smear wipes up. I know i made a big mistake here, but are there any suggestions as to how to reduce this stickiness? Now, all the dust and footprints really show up. What product would i use to wash this floor? i thought i could use water-based products since i thought i was applying acrylic. But the applicator I used sure feels waxy.

Thanks.

Cure times can vary dramtically with weather. If you have high humidity in the home, it will take a long time to cure.

How did you apply this finish? Did you apply in going in the direction of the grain?

It is parquet floor, and the strips of wood in each adjacent square are oriented differently. So, no, I didn't really follow the grain. I just mopped it on using a paint spreader (rectangular foam pad). I am trying to convince myself that the floor is getting less sticky, but you can definitely tell the difference compared to my regular hardwood floors. And let's just say that my cotton mats no longer slide around...

Not sure if that foam spreader you used is the issue, but TreWax says to use a soft cloth or fine steel wool.

What you used probably did not allow the paste to get down into the wood, instead you just spread it on the surface.

Actually, I got the idea for the foam spreader from the trewax site. For one step (which is not a paste, but a poured on liquid acrylic-like covering), they list the foam painter pad as a preferred applicator in their faq.

Thanks for your suggestion, though. At this point, I may be looking at tile in our future...
