Hi,
This is a MTD yard machines 3.5 hp B&S engine. When primed and started it runs on very high for a few seconds and stops. I also noticed that the muffler gets really hot just during these few seconds. It doesn't have a throttle control. Until this happened it used to run OK. I cleaned the carb, filter, and changed oil. Not sure what the problem is and where to look for. Thanks for any suggestions.

Being a 3-horse this is likely a "Classic" style Briggs engine utilizing an air-vane governor. If your cooling fins are plugged tight with grass debris this will affect both the cooling ability as well as the operation of the governor (throttle). Remove the flywheel blower shroud and have a look for any accumulation of debris.
