Just acquired a 1953 model 15 HP evinrude. Runs like a new one!!! The gas mix on it calls for 32:1. My question is: with the better 2 cycle oils today,would it be OK to mix 40:1?

No, no, no, no.... use manufacturers original specifications.... Those old engines tend to run "wet" (oily) and you'll be fouling plugs on a semi-regular basis (no big deal, clean em and go) - but they need the lubrication to keep running properly.

I totally disagree! We have 1950's era motors we use up in Canada and the Johnson/Evinrude dealers up there advised us that with the new 50/1 oils they have, its OK to use a 50/1 mix with the old motors, so that's what we've done for the last 15+ years with no problems.

I would be inclined to keep the mix originally recommended. If it has run 54 years and runs like new, why mess with the mix. I don't think that you will save enough on oil to retire early.
