how do you check the alternator? my battery is not charging. 15 hp briggs. 402707 type 1242 01. im sure you are aware of my past problems.....does the entire electrical system need to be working properly in order to have your charging system working properly?

Got a voltmeter? With the engine running full throttle, check at the battery for 13 or more volts. If so, it's charging. If not, either the alternator is bad, or the battery is bad. If the battery is bad, you cannot tell if it's charging this way. You'll have to unplug the alternator wiring and check voltage there.
