I have a frigidaire window unit which is about 3 years old. Even when I set the thermostat to 60 degress, the compressor will run for maybe 3 minutes, shut off for 15 and then turn back on, not long enough to cool my room.
I read that the sensor could be too close to the core, so I pulled the sensor out so it's hanging outside of the unit.
Any ideas what could be wrong?

The condenser is the rough metal surface on the back of the unit correct? That is completely clean. I'm not sure what the "out fan" is, but air is blowing in properly.
Also, I just bought a new unit today and I seem to be having the same problem. It's an 8000btu unit in a room that's about 200 sq ft. The one thing I'm thinking of is that due to my AC setup, I've been putting insulation material on the sides and top of the units. However the back is not obstructed. That couldn't be what's causing the problems could it?

they have side air inlets that must be unobstructed. Through the wall units are built differently. They have a much deeper sleeve so that the side air inlets protrude beyond the building.
When the old unit is removed, slide it out of the shell, and remove all the screws on the outside casing and the side extenders. Remove the outside coil screws from the base cabinet tray and gently lift and bend it out to the side. Wash it (the coil) down with simple green and a garden hose in the opposite direction of air flow. Leave it in the sun for several hours to dry and reassemble. Sell it, or keep it as a reserve.
