Have a serious problem with Barn Swallows building a nest on top of the hanging lamp in my front porch area. Unfortunately, we let them build once over a drain pipe nearby before we discovered how nasty they were - spreading their youngs' poop everywhere to clean out the nest. After tearing down the nest, I have tried WD40 and then Petroleum Jelly on top of the light fixture. Still, they return. Any ideas?

They like to nest in the same place every year. Put something up to deter their nesting. Perhaps some chicken wire.
