Doors and Windows - Andersen Tilt Windows (1991) - Cracked Glass

I cracked the glass in the lower part of my Andersen window. I want to remove the window so I can bring it in to have the glass replaced. Because of the 'jamb liner' (for lack of anything better to call it), I do not know how to get the window out. The grey strip on both sides of the window impedes my ability to tilt the darn thing out.

I just had an addition put on the house and had NEW Andersen windows installed and those are easy .. No grey strip on the sides.

Can you give me instructions as to how to get that dad gummed window out without having to call in a professional or replace the whole thing.

I would very much appreciate any help you can give.

You should be able to look it up on Andersens web site. I don't recall how their tilt sash works, but most come out by lifting one side of the sash after tilting the window in at about 90deg. The whole sash has to be replaced, the glass itself does not come out. There should be some numbers on a tag on the side of the sash, if not, there is an Andersen logo(triangle with letters/numbers) etched into the corner of every glass pane, that will tell them what you need. And it is under warranty.

OK ... now you have my curiosity up - how can a window which is 16 years old be under warranty?

BTW .. I have tried to find info on that Andersen window site and I can not find anything. I will have to call some 1-800 number.

Andersen warrants the glass for 20 yrs, other window components for 10 yrs. That could easily be a stress crack.

Bill, fogglake said that he cracked the glass...........no warranty!!! If the glass is "High Performance", and I think it is, you must get the entire sash from Andersen. If you get the glass replaced at a glass shop, the tint of the low-e will not match.

Do Not replace glass only. all wood window and after market glazing do not mix. You will be replacing the sash 5 years from now because it will be rotted out. Call Andersen 1-888-888-7020 and order a sash and directions will come with it to replace it.

I've replaced 100's of insulating glass units in Andersen windows and doors. If they are properly installed there should be no problems.

I guess unknowingly you've voided warranties on 100's of Andersen products. 2nd page, 1st paragraph, last sentence of the written warranty........glass has to be factory installed.

Does Andersen cover glass broken by a baseball thrown through it?

no, but the proper way to fix the baseball issue is to replace the entire sash and not just the glass. by replacing the glass only you void the warranty that was on the sash rails and stiles. So it is not just a glass issue.

IN this particular post we were dealing with a 1991 window, which had no warranty left on non glass parts. So if the glass is busted there is no warranty left at all, and if one wanted to save a few dollars, then I say let them. It is possible, but after 17 years of sun/weather, those glazing strips are extremely brittle and tend to break. I feel the better option is to buy a new sash for a little bit more and get a new 20/10 warranty on the new sash, and save themselves the aggrivation of changing a glass pak which for an average DIY is much more difficult that a swap of sashes. Even with having to stain or paint the new sash, it would be the choice for me.

This is only my opinion, you can decide for yourself the way to go.
