I live in a 1400 square foot house near the beach in San Clemente, Ca where the climate is so mild I don't need Air Conditioning. I am considering a whole house fan for the warmer summer months, but am trying to decide between a GAF Master flow Direct drive 24 inch fan which is recommended for our house size, and a belt drive tandem (2 small fan unit) which is quieter and has more features but is a couple hundred dollars more expensive. The Models are WHFS24 and WHFTAN1. There is also a Belt drive 30 inch (30Bwhfs) that could be an option but is recommended for bigger houses. I wondering if anybody has any experience with these types of units and can let me know if belt drive units are too loud and any other factors I should consider. I appreciate any input I can get.

The 24 inch fan is $180, the 30 inch fan is $220 and the tandem is $400. I can get a $100 Dollar rebate on any of them from the local power company

But I would go with the direct drive unit. I think it would be the quietest.

With a belt drive you would have the added please of checking the belt once a year to check tension, and when it starts to wear you might get a nice loud squeel when it starts or even while it's running. And with belt drive you may even get to ad the joy of greasing bearings every 6 to 12 months.

Hi Pharmhand -

A Gable attic fan will exhaust hot air out of your attic only. You will still have heat build-up in the living area of your home.

I would recommend the following for your application:

1 HV1000 - http://www.wholehousefan.com/hv-1000.html

This particular unit will work well for your home. It may look similar to other fans you have seen, but their is a big difference in quality, noise levels and design. This particular model has been around since 1994, it is UL listed, Insulated when not in use and fairly quiet when running. The fan and design are proven. There is no maintenance, and when the fan is off - you will have an insulated air-tight seal between your attic and living area.

This fan also qualifies for a $100 rebate from Southern California Edison, when installed in a home with a central A/C unit.

Hope that helps.
