Hi!
We have a patio that consists of largish stones (like slate) set into concrete. It is starting to become uneven and some of the stones are getting loose.
We would like, instead, to have a tile covered patio. My question is: since we obviously cannot put tile on top of the current uneven surface, would it be a good idea to pour a layer of cement on top of it to level it out, and then add the new tile to the concrete? Or do I need to remove the current patio first and start from scratch? (Which is definitley not my preference.) Or, any other options?
I'd be grateful for any guidance on this.
Best,
Eric

If one of the stones has become loose, there is a very good chance that more will become unstable and you need a clean, strong base to lay tile.
I would tear all the old stones out and start fresh.

Hi--I appreciate the info. Thank you!
Okay, I'm sure you are right. I guess I was just hoping there might be some way to avoid the demolition of the existing patio. Sounds like that's not a good way to go.
Thanks again.
