I bought a new gas water heater and had it installed earlier in the week. After the installer had finished and left I noticed that there's a dent in the tank that's about 6 inches long and a half inch deep. It's about a foot from the top. It seems to be working ok and isn't leaking, but I'm concerned that there could be some internal damage that would cause it to fail sooner than it should. I'e made several calls to the store where I bought it and to their customer service number, but they haven't been very helpful. Is this anything to worry about?

Probably will be okay. The insulation between the outer shell and inner tank should have protected the inner tank from damage. Then again, there is no easy way to tell, and you could get premature rust out of the inner tank.

You bought new, not scratch and dent, I would raise a fuss until they replaced it, or gave me an extended warranty, or an price reduction to cover early replacement - if needed.

I agree with Goldstar. Will it be ok? Most likely..you probably won't have any problems because of this dent. Honestly they happen quite often.

But that isn't the point. As a contractor i've replaced quite a few where my guy accidentally dented a heater.

You paid for a new heater...with no dents...so you shoul dget a new heater...no dents...regardless if it causes an issue or not. If it was a dent the size of a dime then i'd say your being picky heh.

Being at the top it sounds as if it banged on something..it isn't like a guys knee bumped it up at the top.

It's unanimous to the previous comments. Will probably be alright, but.....

My company would replace it regardless of it being shipped that way or done during the install. I would raise a fuss to either get a new heater or get some $$$ knocked off.
