I have searched the net and consulted others on this, but no dice. I have an older Janitrol heat pump. When you switch the thermostat on, the inside unit in the attic will come on and blow warm air. The outside unit will not come on. All you can hear is a buzzing sound.

I have replaced the fan motor and the capacitor, but neither seems to work. My dad works for an HVAC supply house and has tried to help me over the phone as best he could, but nothing seems to work. Any thoughts? I'm trying to salvage my heat pump temporarily until I can afford to pour money into a new system?

You replaced the fan motor and capacitor and still compresor and fan don't start. But there is a buzz sound.

Poor old mister contactor is trying real hard to pull in, I think< but just can't quite make it.

Since you seem to have a clue. Kill power to the outdoor unit and open the control box, inspect the contactor. And bugs in there? Does it move in and out freely?

Call for cooling if the contactor is buzzing push it in and see if it makes.

I bet this is the problem.
