Hello,

I desperately need some advice on what to do with my window unit. It is driving me crazy. This has happened before and I have been able to live with it, but this time I just can't. It generally happens each year around the beginning of summer, so it must have something to do with condensation and temperature.

The unit generally runs 24 hrs a day. I live in Louisiana and have a pretty big apartment and only two window units to cool it.

The unit in my bedroom is the problem. It starts making this clack clack, gurgling, whacking sound.......basically like a mix between and loud duck and a bumblebee. Its hard to describe. Its very loud, though, and kinda like the sound of a boat propeller just barely into the top of the water, which I'm sure makes sense because this it probably a fan in water. In addition, the damn thing starts spitting out water from the vents which proceeds to soak my pillows and the top of my bed.

Now, at first, I could go out there and tip the back end downward and water would run out of the back hole. That helped at first and the problem would go away for 6-8 hours, but now that isn't even helping at all. The unit is pretty clean inside and there doesn't seem to be any problem with water draining from the back end of the unit. Yesterday the thing was dry as a bone, but it was still making that horribly loud noise and spitting drops of water from the vents. It there a way to drain this water out of the enclosed front portion of the unit and keep ot from coming back or am I just completely screwed. I haven't slept in a week as I'm either melting from the heat or desperately trying to cover my ears from the horrible noise.

I've tried turning it off for a few hours, but when I turn it back on, the problem starts right back up. What can I do to stop this!!!! Please give me any advice that you can. I need to address this problem soon.

Thanks so much for any help that you can offer!

John

Pull the unit out of the cabinet, get help if it's heavy. Take it outside and inspect it.

Take a good look at it, there is an indoor section and an outdoor section. Should be pretty easy to figure out.

There should be drain holes between the two or a small tube to drain the water from the indoor to the outdoor and then through holes to the ground.

Something is plugged up. Find it and fix it.

Don't sry water you any motors or electrical parts.

Thanks much, I just used some towels and a coathanger to soak up all the water in the bottom of the front section. Tomorrow I'll take it down and open it up to check for the drain tube.

Thanks so much again. I really don't know much about a/c's. Have a great day.

It should read, "Don't spray water on any motors or electrical parts.".

Just be safe!

While you have it out take a look at the outside coil. The fan blows air from the inside of the unit out the back. If the coil is dirty it's a good time to vacuum or wash it out. You can remove the screws connecting the plastic fan shroud and the condenser and GENTLY swing the condenser out for cleaning. But just enough to gain enough access. Then put it all back togather.

Common sense here is your best friend.
