I live in a 1500 sq ft home in humid Houston, Texas, plan to live in it forever, and would like opinions on a/c brands.
The only a/c names I'm familiar with (thanks to commercials on cable t.v.) are Carrier, Trane, and American Standard.
Thanks in advance.

Brands are not as important as who installs them. Debating which brand is better is like asking which is better, Ford or Chevy. It's always a win/lose question.
I however, have had Carrier with no problems.
Make sure you get multiple, meaning at least 3, bids. I usually do not go with the cheapest nor the most expensive. I usually go with the company with a good track record.
Make sure the company is licensed and bonded, and have them provide some references.
You could get a top of the line model(s) and if the installer doesn't install correctly, you will be screwed.
If you plan on staying in the home forever like you said, I would look into getting a 15+ SEER unit. They are more expensive, but will pay itself back overtime.

I Agree, install is key. Forget brand names. Find a good technician and follow his/her advice.
