We have a concrete patio and would like to build a deck over it. At the same time, we'd like to extend the area of the deck approximately 5 feet beyond the patio. There is a sliding glass door to the patio with a brick "lip" and the step down to the patio is the width of the brick, ~ 4 inches. Right now the patio is open, but we plan to roof over it and perhaps screen in part of it in a couple of years. Can we build the deck bigger than the patio and if so, how should we go about building the section that extends beyond the concrete with it lying so low to the ground?
