Ok my bedroom was built without a cold air duct. It has a air vent for the heat/Air con but is to large of a room to be cooled or heated by just that. In the summers temps hit a low of 80 and often hit 85. The winter isn't an issue because I can just pile on blankets, but I really need something more then the ceiling fan for the summer. I also have a register booster which is the only reason it doesn't get above 85.
Now is where the problem comes in. I have a window in my room but it is only a crank open window so I can't put a window A/C in correct ? Even if so my mom doesn't want to see one sticking out and being a young teen there isn't much I can do about that. Is there anyway I could get one of those portable A/C units or just any A/C system short of putting in new duct work and drilling holes in the wall ?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you dont have a cold air return in the room. do you keep the door closed. If so you need room under the door for air to get out. About 2" or better above the rug that will help. Try the blower on 24/7. ;) Yes they have AC for the swing out windows

The door is usually left open all day. I'm only in there when I am trying to sleep. I do have the blower on most of the day and it's on full blast since I am elsewhere in the house (read where it's cool). I'm going to look into A/C for swing out windows, I didn't even bother looking before because I didn't think they existed. Thanks!

I found one at target the other day in their ad. I haven't looked at it in a store yet though. But I'm not sure if this portable one will work with a casement window or not. http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-8/qid=1179191142/ref=sr_1_8/602-7007809-3355827?ie=UTF8&asin=B000KNU96M That's the one I'm looking at, also how do the kits that do work with casement windows usually work ? Oh and is Haier a good brand ?

I hear a lot of mixed results with those type of a/c. I am not for these type of unit.
Why? The take air out of your room that you already paid to cool, and taking it right outside! The air that is taken out of of the room needs to be made up some how.. So you are going to get air in the home some where, adding humidity.
The unit Ed is talking about is this.

So does that mean there is not real seal and the window is pretty much left open aside from where the exhaust hose goes out ? I am just lost on how they work.
As for the actual window air conditioner I might look into them but they are hard to find around here I think.

A portable unit has both coil inside this case.
The cooling coil that cools the room. then the condensor coil that puts off heat.
There is a fan the pulls air (already cooled room air) over the condensor coil to cool it off, and the takes the hot air and blows it out a tube out to the window. The "kit" is some what tight, but somewhere else in the home the air is drawn into the house to "make up" for the air that is blown outside.
Casement windows are really hard to find, I know we(Home Depot) had them last year, we just haven't gotten all of ours in yet this year. So may want to check ther and see if it in your store yet.
