I'd like to remodel our master bath and have many questions regarding the design and materials. The last time it was remodeled was in the late 80's.
The room is long and narrow. As you walk in the door there's 9' counter on the right (2 cabinets with a makeup area in the middle), and a spa tub on the left. At the end is separate 4'x8' room with the toilet on the right and a 3x4 shower stall and the left. This is separated from the rest of the bathroom by a wall and door.
Now for the questions:
1) The counter is really long. I was thinking of shortening the length and putting a linen cabinet at the end. For proper design does there need to be a linen cabinet on each end, or is on one end OK? It would have to be at the far end because at the end near the door it would intefere with the light switches. Is the linen cabinet a stand alone 21" depth cabinet that goes to the floor, or should it be less deep and sit on top of the counter?
2) The toilet/shower room is pretty small. I'd like to open it up by removing the door and header, just leaving a partial wall to hide the toilet (and the wall between the tub and shower). Does this sound reasonable, or is it better to keep the door?
3) The shower stall has a small 2' shower door and 2' wall. There's a header over the door, and the shower is tiled all the way up and on the ceiling. I'd like to have a bigger shower door (custom I assume) that's the full 4' width and remove the wall and header. Then the new tile would stop 1' short of the ceiling. Is this the right thing to do?
4) The floor tile is a light gray marble (also used on the tub deck). It's in good shape so I was considering keeping it and having it polished. Is polished marble still in style? I'd really prefer travertine but can't justify the cost of replacing floor if it's still solid.
5) What kind of shower tile and counter would work with the marble floor? I assume granite counter would work with polished marble. For the shower tile, we really like natural/tumbled stone, but would it work with the marble floor, or do we need to stick with shiny materials (ceramic/porcelian shower tile)? What size tiles are popular now for the wall and shower floor? I like the look of subway tile but my wife does not.
Thanks, Don

Does anyone have comments/suggestions here? My questions are related to the design of the bathroom, not how-to questions. This is the reason I initially posted on the design forum, but it got moved here.

Linen cabinet at the far end of the vanity. Floor to ceiling. This could replace the short wall you were wanting to leave to partially hide the toilet.
