A friend was just given a very low-mileage Maytag dryer which has a 3-prong cord on it and her current dryer is a 4-prong. Can I swap the 4-prong cord to the 'new' 3-prong dryer? Or - was the current in-place dryer designed as a 4-prong unit from the factory.

most appliances that this involves (dryers and stoves) are convertable from 3 to 4 or 4 to 3 wire connections. The owners manual should be consulted for the proper method to do such.

Generally, for going from 3 to 4 wire, a bond strap is removed.

4 to 3, a bond strap is attached.

the bond strap is used to make a connection between the neutral and ground connections within the appliance.

These straps are generally located where the electrical connection is on the dryer.

in either case the correct cord in then attached as required.
